Author Topic: Rear brake disks alternative Murena 2.2  (Read 39819 times)

Rear brake disks on the 2.2 are unique for the Murena, and no other car
have them fitted.
The after market disks are a bit expensive and some dealers don't have
them anymore.
There is not much information on this subject.
Some people mention to use Audi, others Alfa disks, but nobody couldt tell me exact what fits.
So I searched the H-base comparing every car disks with the disks
from the Murena and I couldn't find something that would suite my needs.
A bit disapointed I left the idea doing this.

At the beginning of this year a fellow member of the Belgium club wanted
to do the same job and together we started searching for a replacement again.
After spending a lot of time we found this as a good substitute.


About the same diameter.
The hole in the midle was a bit smaller (72mm) where the Murena has
75mm, but thicknes was ok.


Apart from the holes for the wheelbolts there are only 2 holes.
We needed 4 and tapped with fine metric M10x1.25
We puted de disks crosswise together and made and tapped the holes (drill 8.5mm).




After that the middle hole need to be made on a machine that can handle the 261 mm disks.
That was a 10 minute job at a specialised firm and cost me peanuts.
After that the Murena part fits excellent on the disk.



putting the disk and the Murena part together you need to use the same washers (they are special) and MOUNT THEM THE SAME WAY USING LOCKTITE ON THE BOLTS, as described in the manual with 5,5 daNm.


Then fitted the calipers using 6mm thick washers because they were out of line.(we now have bushes fitted).
Because of that we needed longer bolts, and they were difficult to find (fine metric M12x1.50).
After some searching I found them at a Hyundai garage and they have the same grade steel.
The ordering number there on the picture.


They are 1mm to long, so get a bit off .
Notice the 6mm washers






Everything revised.


New seals, pads, pistons, brakeflexibles, and rust removed between the alu and steel.

They are fitted since March, and here is a movie of a Murena in destress.

They work awesome, and balance is perfect using the right Ferodo pads.

The disks are from Alfa Romeo front pre 1980.

Alfa 75
Alfa 90
Alfa Alfetta
Alfa GTV 1e generatie.
Alfa Giulietta

Note....Thicknes may vary from 11mm to 12,7 mm depending on manufacturer.
At the shop a set costs around €70.
At ebay to be found around €20-40 looking for a bargain.

There are more ways to get the rattle out.
If there is to much play on the pads (one of the reason for rattle), you can put anti rattle springs on the up and downside of the pads, using 4 total each side.
This will keep the pads floating in the middle.

Yes, but these little springs are no more available here in CZ  Sad so I found the solution in bigger springs from Renault, which are doing the job also very well and they are still available.

Philippe of the french forum made a list.
I took the freedom of linking this list.



I verified some of the numbers.
It seems ok.

I had a lot of help from Godfried at the Belgium club in this www.matramania.be
He helped me out where I was stranded.
The topic is in the member section so I can't link to show the pics of his car.
His car has the same disks running for a few weeks now.
Mine are a bit thinner 11.5mm and his 12.7mm they all fit perfectly.

This is a very interesting conversion. I thinks we can expect to see the rear discs remanufactured, but until that happens, this is a feasible solution.

I have one thing, which confuses me a bit:

What spacers is this?

I meant washer.(sorry)
It is a special washer with a bend in it and special steel.
I know someone fitted a normal washer there and every week it came loose.
It is also important to use locktite there.
I will correct my post.

I still have some in stock, but also here they are more difficult to find.

I have got new rear discs from Carjoy this week. Laszlo told me he had them remanufactured from Hungary

He told me a few months back that he was busy with that, but could not find a place that was capable of doing it.
For me it's not important anymore.
I am happy with the Alfa disks.
Are they reasonable priced?

I think that's a normal price.

Not cheap, but not seriously expensive either. Good to hear they are now available again! Though the Alfa conversion is well made.

There is a fault in all partshops documentation.
If you order for 2.2 or 2.2 S, you get disks for 1.6.
The disks for the 2.2 series is 260mm and for the 1.6 about 234mm.
The above auction has this mistake to.
