Hi all,

I need a new exhaust for my Grand Espace V6 24v. Renault and other brands want's more than 4000 DKK for a new one. This makes me consider a custom built stainless exhaust, but before I jump on the first good offer I can find for such a beast, I'd like to hear what you guys have done.

The one I'm currently replacing was very cheap and has lasted for 4 years, so I can't complain, but I can't find it any more. I should have bought two! Smiley

Thanks a lot Bo, that's better... I have'nt found the ones for the V6 before on eBay.

But still only 3-4 years lifetime, plus the exit pipe from the cat is near corroded through too, so I'm actually thinking about replacing everything from engine and back.

Got a new cat for our 24v last year from http://myworld.ebay.com/citroenservices/
Company behind is AEP Direct uk - http://www.aepdirect.com/

Think it was something along £120-130 for the cat

Been thinking about stainless steel exhaust too, twin pipe....

I just found this company near Göteborg:

http://www.rakaror.o.se/

It seems they have everything we need. Now I just need a quote on building the stuff. Especially the bend over the rear axle could be a challenge, unless we're using bends to make it...

Remus has an exhaust, but only the end. Price is reasonable at about 3500 DKK. Is there anyone here who has experience with or an opinion about Remus?

Whilst my car is a lot older Anders, my exhaust started to fail earlier this year, and the Quadra has a different system to the normal 2WD.  I was told the 4WD system was no longer available in the UK from just about everyone I tried, and even Renault didn't stock it any longer.  I would have to wait 10 days to get the silencer from France and the cost was ridiculous for a mild steel item.  So I had one made to fit in a few hours, from stainless steel at two thirds the cost, and it has a life time guarantee!

Congratulations on your new exhaust, Roy! My original idea was to do something like that, but I haven't yet found a good exhaust builder here who has the necessary parts in stock. It seems that around here, stainless steel exhausts are only for young lads with loud cars and big budgets Sad

The Remus muffler is claimed to fit all Espace 3's, which I don't understand, as the size of the muffler itself depends on the engine type, and rear overhang is different for the Grand and short Espace. So even if it's a big company making quality products (and price is not that bad), I'm not sure about it. And for some reason they don't have a middle muffler available, which to me indicates that the product is more about style than quality. I wouldn't mind paying more for a good looking product, but this doesn't make sense to me.

So at the moment, I think I'll just buy a standard exhaust. As Bo found below, they can be bought rather cheaply.

But it's a pity really, since a mild steel exhaust can only be expected to last 3-4 years in the Danish climate...

It seems I was wrong: The rear overhang on the Grand and short Espace is actually the same. That does put a bit in favour of the Remus, but only if I can find stainless components for the rest - and find someone to build it.

Espace, because it's worth it!

So where did you get yours made Roy if you don't mind me asking?

My 7 year old JE0K is still on the original exhaust manufactured by Eberspächer but I recently found a small hole in the welded joint to the rear of the centre silencer. I filled it with weld OK but obviously need to have an eye on potential replacement and Grand Espace exhaust systems don't appear to be readily available in the after market and will in any case be the usual mild steel made to a price and not to last.

No news yet, I haven't had time to do anything... I've received an offer for a complete new exhaust including catalytic converter in SS for about 10000 DKK - not bad considering long life etc, but not cheap either, so I haven't settled on a solution yet.

It's not that difficult to make a stainless steel exhaust. You'll need a DC TIG welder and the ability to weld it, and a cutter of some sort so you can cut the bends exactly as you want them.
For materials you'll need a flange (two for the V6) cut which can be done by a waterjet or laser cutting company using the exhaust gasket as model. Then you'll need an assortment of SS pipes and SS bends, some silenceers (mufflers) and some odds and sods to hang the exhaust up and things like that.

That is if you want to save money, not time.

I've got a friend here who's specialising in making SS exhausts and other "exotic" fabrications. He's worked for Prodrive etc. Total perfectionist. Smiley

Unfortunately, I have no time! So I've got to get someone else do the work - and that costs money.

Indeed. He's already helped me buy a TIG welder and helped me teach myself how to use it.  Cool

Hope you get the exhaust sorted. Smiley I'm sure it would be a very nice project, should you have the time.
