I'm guessing that Matra fitted the single carb for cost reasons.

Otto, What main jet system are you running and is your cam standard?

Also what are your idle jets? Mine are 47s but I have a set of 50s to try this weekend. I'm having problems with the idle and starting needs the throttle pumping a lot.

New exhaust "straight through" - good sound!

Is the cold start cable moving the lever on the rear face of the carb? Maybe the "cold starting" jets need cleaning?

I've cleaned the 'cold start' jets a couple of times and found in the first clean a bit of dirt in the ones with the o ring tab. That clean made things much better but still not easy to start from cold. I haven't looked into changing this part of the set up yet. A couple of dabs on the trottle before firing helps and then choke on half gets it going. But still lumpy.

Today I fitted 50 idle jets to replace the 47s. Good result. A little choke needed at first but very quickly no need for any choke. The 47s needed choke until upto temp. The engine has not died at all today but I will need more cold starts to say this is correct. I may have problems with the choke mechanism. Roy advised me to look at the flats and little cogs which I need to do. I put this off today because I couldn't resist a full throttle burn up around the Cotswold country roads. Also with the 50 idle jets the car runs easily and quitely in low gears. But put your foot down and all hell breaks loose. I dread to think what will happen when the new Simca Rallye 2 fast cam goes in. These twin 36DCNFs are definately staying in my car.

Otto,

How are you connecting the rocker cover breather? Any photos? I'm wondering if a catch tank is better than the way I've done it by taking it back into the carbs. I still don't know how the Bagheera did this exactly but my way seems to  be working.

The Bagheera oil vapour outlet on the top of the rocker box has a pipe leading to the air inlet system between the air filter and the carb inlet. I did the same thing on the supercharger system and it works well. An oil catch tank is only necessary if you cannot send the vapour back into the engine to be consumed. Problems with a catch tank are extra weight and complication and the need, maybe, to empty it.

Thanks Andy,

I tried an oil catch tank (see pic) but decided the other way was better. I'm still to see or remember a Bagheera with the system you state. Marion will be at Prescott in her featured Practical Classics car refered to here in another post  to show me if she has the twin carbs but I can't remember if her car has the twin set up.

Will you be sprinting the hill at Prescott this year? If so, see you there.

....From Titus...Will you be sprinting the hill at Prescott this year?

I put in my entry months ago and chased them yesterday. It seems that they do not send out acknowledgements until the closing date for entries.

I presume they will exclude any deemed "unsuitable" but I think they will let me in as they have twice before.

Will you be entering or exhibiting at Prescott?

I'll be there for both days with the Murena and hopefully my Rancho as well. I haven't had the time or money to get a licence to compete. Also I would worry about crashing my one and only. I'll have to wait for better times to buy a sprinter! That said, I'm off to Mallory Park in a couple of weeks time with the Simca Club for a track day. I'll be removing my good light lenses for that one, just in case.
